Members can subscribe to the Thursday Rural Rides email list here, where you will receive emails regarding changes to the Thursday Rural Rides organised by SARCC.

Normally starting at the Woodside Swimming Pool Car Park except on the first Thursday of every month it will start from various other locations. Riders need to arrange their own transport. Other club members may be able to assist. The telephone number of the ride leader is always provided and it is prudent to check for any change in the meeting place details. If there is a large number of cyclists on a ride the Backup leader will take half the riders on another ride, possibly longer and hillier than the guidelines below for those wanting more of a challenge.

Members interested in still riding should review the SARCC web site after 7pm the evening before the ride to determine if the ride has been cancelled, modified or will continue as scheduled. Would all leaders please contact the ride co-ordinator, Di on 0424 957 532 before 6pm to discuss, so a decision can be made.

Equipment

All riders should carry a pump, a puncture repair kit and a water bottle, and when necessary an effective raincoat. Bring your own lunch, as there may be nowhere to purchase your lunch. We usually stop for morning coffee, so it may be possible to buy lunch then. Check with the leader before the day of the ride.

Ride Guidelines for Leaders and Participants

• The main ride to be generally less than 50km, with the target being 40km to 45km
• The total climb to be between 550m to 800m
• Try to use the quieter roads but be aware that some tracks become unsuitable in the wet.
• If possible, the route planned using Ride with GPS or similar to ensure that the ride confirms to the guidelines. David Kemp can help with this.
• Participants need to be given a clear description of the difficulty of the ride at the ride briefing. Preferably the route has been put onto the SARCC website.
• Routes be planned that enable shorter options, if possible.
• Aim to complete rides by 2.30pm
• Rides to account for weather conditions.
• Be flexible to account for who turns up.
• New leaders to submit plans to David or Clive for discussion.

If you are leading a ride new to you, it is highly recommended that you actually ride it before leading it

22 January 2026 TDU stage 2 – Special Away Ride
Meet 10:00am Norton Summit Road Recreational Reserve. Out via Moores Rd, Marble Hill, Cherryville to Ashton (10km), to be there well before 11:30 when TDU riders come through – Coffee stop. But be aware coffee may take a while to get. Cruise down Collins Rd (4km) to see TDU riders in Uraidla at 11:58. Climb back up Collins Road to the top of Marble Hill for 13:11. That’s 6.7km and 153m climbing in 1hr 13 mins. Possible! Back down to Uraidla (6.7km) for the Finish at 14:51. Easy peasy. 18 December 2025 Christmas Ride – Cancelled
The ride is cancelled due to the hot weather. However, you are still welcome to arrive at Di and Niv’s place from 10:30am onwards for a swim, a shared lunch and drinks, as per the original plan. Meet at 67 Ostigh road, Carey Gully. Bring along food to share and your drinks. Swimmers, if you want to take a dip in the pool. Partners welcome to come along. 23 October 2025 Away Ride – Kuitpo
Meet 10am, Meadows Memorial Hall. Toilets close by. BYO lunch and drinks for lunch in the forest. 78% of the ride is unpaved, so MTB & Gravel bikes to enjoy the lovely dirt roads, forestry tracks, single lane tracks and minimal bitumen. Tree Climb for coffee at 15km with toilets and limited food options. There is a shorter ride option of 41.6km for those that don’t want to do the full distance. The longer version is 48.3km has a 13.8% hill up a loose dirt road early on which is tough on a manual bike. Lunch will be undercover or at a open air picnic tables depending on the weather. There’s a 100m climb early on for both routes which gets us up to the great views. Come along and enjoy a day in the Kuitpo Forest and the quiet dirt roads nearby. April 3rd 2025 Away Ride – Belair Sturt Sheps Three Park Loop
Meet Sheoak Road adjacent to the Belair Railway Station at 10am. It may be good for some to bring their train pass: The climb out of Sheps back up to Belair to finish is quite challenging and catching the train back to Belair from Eden Hills after lunch is recommended for those who wouldn’t enjoy a 270m ascent over 4km to finish! Trails will suit MTBs or skilled gravel bike riders. Although a short ride there is a steep climb into Sturt, some loose gravel, a bit of sand, and a reasonably rocky single-track through Sturt Rec Park. We aim to enjoy the ride and views so we won’t be in a rush. *** the leader/s will wait at the top of each climb and at turn for folk to everyone to catch their breath if needed ***. March 6th 2025 Away Ride – Brighton to Seaford
Southern suburbs exploring the unpaved trails and easy single tracks from Brighton to Seaford. The start will be the Brighton railway station to make it easy for parking and those travelling by train. The trails will suit MTB, Gravel bikes and E-MTB. Everyone bring your Train pass with you as we may catch the train back to Brighton if the distance becomes too long.
Catch train at Brighton Railway station at 10:04 am and travel to Seaford Meadows (20 minute trip) ride along the Onkaparinga river through the Onkaparinga recreation park for some easy single track then coffee stop at the renowned Becks Bakery in Port Noarlunga then skirt the golf course onto the unpaved Velloway with detour for lunch at Hugh Johnson Boulevard Reserve then back to the Velloway and into OHalloran Hill Mountain bike park for some funstuff with single tracks then ending at Brighton Railway station.

January 23rd 2025 Woodside – TDU Special Ride
Meet 10am sharp at Woodside Pool car park. Some unsealed roads. Although riding on main roads, they should be filled with bike riders, few cars and hence safer than normal. Please wear SARCC top if you have one. Coffee at Balhannah. Then Swamp road towards Lenswood. Lunch when TDU passes us. Depending on whether we make it to Lenswood before the TDU pass 1 arrives we may shortcut to Lobethal Road before heading towards Uraidla via Deviation Road and Greenhill Road to get to the finish line. Greenhill Road will be closed from 6am to 7pm at Uraidla so should be reasonably safe to head back towards Balhannah before using Swamp and Pye Roads to get back to Oakbank and the Amy Gillet bikeway. Meet 10 a.m. at Meadows Memorial Hall. Toilets are close by. Bring your own lunch and drinks as we will be lunching in the forest. We’re staying on minor roads and tracks pretty much all day enjoying single lane dirt roads with great views, forest fire tracks, a few sections of the Heysen trail and a couple of hundred metres of a flat wide single lane walking track.  With 64% of the ride unpaved bring your MTB or gravel bike. Coffee stop planned at Tree Climb 17km into the ride with toilets and limited food options and our lunch stop planned later on somewhere in the forest which will be decided on the day depending on the weather with seated, unseated, covered and uncovered options available. Sven suggested a ride on Australia day. Then Pete was somehow dobbed in to lead but then someone asked for maximum gravel. So, Pete proposed we try https://ridewithgps.com/routes/41843840
Basically route 34, but with extra gravel (61% as opposed to 48%). Its slightly tougher than the guidelines by 3km and it also has 854m elevation – but with training for NZ in full swing and it being an unscheduled ride Pete would like to do it if others will join him. Meet at Lovells Bakery (northern end of Mt Pleasant), *please note*, NOT the Oval. Since there are NO facilities or coffee on this ride, those, (like me) who want a coffee, should get to Lovells well before 10am and have a coffee before we leave promptly at 10am. The ride is about 45kms, with around 650M climbing…not any different to a regular Thurs ride. Riders will need to bring lunch (can be purchased at Lovells) and any morning tea they require. Riders should also have spares, tools etc as well. Toilet stops will be ad hoc nature breaks.
There is a tiny amount of main road, the vast majority is on back well-formed gravel, and on roads which will be new to most people. There are some interesting features on the route and some high country which hasn’t been ridden by this group ever, that I’m aware of. Hope you can make it.
