Details:

Sunday 22nd September. Travel to Port Augusta Ride, Bus or Train, stay in Caravan Park. (Bus is cheaper than the train but they will not guarantee that they will carry your bike on the same day or trip. (I will be travelling by train).

Most days will be 70 km on on dirt or gravel roads. (It is 20 years since I have travelled some of these roads – don’t know if they have improved or deteriorated.)There are long distances between towns so you must be prepared to carry enough water for three and a half days supply.

Staying in Caravan Park at Port Augusta, Hawker, Morgan and Nuriootpa; possibly staying in the hotel at Yunta. All other nights will be on the side of the track.

This will be a hard ride in remote areas out of mobile range for days at a time so is not suitable for inexperienced tourers.

The route to Hawker will be 2 days along the plains past the Warrakimba Woolshed, Neuroodla and Hookina before finally climbing to Hawker.

Hawker to Yunta will be past Warkowie, Holowilena , Baratta and Teetulpa Stations and a short stop exploring the old Waukaringa Gold fields. The road will pass along the bed of Woolshad Creek and cross the mighty Siccus River. Hopefully we will be able to see the results of the awesome floods along this river with huge tree trunks stuck 20 metres up other gum trees.

There will be a half day rest at Yunta hopefully staying the night in the Yunta Hotel.

The Yunta – Morgan leg will be the longest stretch requiring 3 and a half days water supply to be carried. The road will be past Manunda, Lilydale and Canegrass stations to name a few, & finally following the Old mail Road into Morgan.

A full days rest at Morgan will allow time to recuperate and explore the history of this old River Town.

The final leg will be along the old Mail Road back to civilisation.
